There could be lots of lonely partridges on the first day of Christmas this year, because the city chopped down nine pears trees on DeKalb avenue last week.
The Parks Department claimed it had to euthanize the feeble arbors, which would have suffered a crueler fate during upcoming construction work that is slated to add new lighting and sidewalks along the Fulton Mall.
“They were deemed to be unlikely to survive the construction process,” said Parks spokesman Phil Abramson.
“They were inspected and exhibited signs of past storm damage, had a lean towards the street and many of their branches had previously been steadied with cables to prevent additional breakages.”
The trees, which were between Flatbush Avenue and Bond Street are headed to the Great Forest in the Sky. They will be replaced and a total of 67 new saplings will be planted in a commercial zone noticeably bereft of flora.
