We know, we know: summer ended a week ago, and everyone’s really bummed about it. The good news is, it’s not winter yet, so throw on a sweater, get out of your house and spend some time in the great outdoors of Brooklyn. The next few days are chock full of street festivals, block parties, parades and rock shows — with a healthy dose of leather, lingerie and fishnet stockings thrown in for good measure. Brooklyn: this is your weekend!
• What could be better on a Friday night than a little bit of lace, leather and scantily-clad can can dancers? Go get sexy at the kickoff party for the imfamously campy New York Burlesque Festival at Brooklyn Bowl, hosted by Scotty the Blue Bunny.
• Saturday means, it’s time for the Ragamuffin Parade! We’re talking thousands of kids dressed up as slices of pizza, Good Humor trucks and washing machines, if past parades are any indication of what you’ll see this year. Or, if you’ve got a taste for spice and a hunger for jalepenos, pocket some Pepto and hightail it to the Botanic Gardens on Saturday for the smokin’ hot Chile Pepper Fiesta, where you can chow down on spicy chile chocolate, kimchee with a kick, peppery popsicles and other fiery treats.
• Let’s Antic! We know you couldn’t possibly forget about Brooklyn’s biggest and best street celebration, the Atlantic Antic, but just in case, we’ll remind you that it’s this Sunday. Get ready for more than a mile packed with vendors slinging bahn mi, felafel, jerk chicken, Italian sausages and everything else you can think of (there will also be live music, entertainment and, of course, a bouncy castle set up outside a corrections facility, just the way we like it). • Head to the Red Hook ballfields to stuff your face full of chicken- and pork-filled corn patties at Solber Papusas. Don’t forget to congratulate owners Reina Bermudez and Rafael Soler on their momentous victory at this year’s Vendy Awards, where they snagged the gold.
• Hey, Jews: you’ve got seven days until the 24-hour Yom Kippur fast begins, so in the meantime visit these Jewish eateries, wish the owners a Happy New Year and chow down on some plotz-worthy pickled herring, pierogis and sweet-and-sour brisket — but be careful, it’s got pork cheek in it!
