Brooklyn failed to maintain an early lead, and to capitalize on a late-game rally, last night, letting the Ironbirds soar to victory — and a second-place tie with the Clones in their McNamara Division of the New York-Penn League.
Our boys started strong, replying to the two runs Aberdeen scored in the top of the first by scoring three of their own in the bottom of the inning.
Jose Miguel Medina smacked a leadoff homer to get things started, and then Clones batters packed the bases — with Chandler Avant cracking a single and Aberdeen walking Wagner Lagrange and Kendall Coleman — allowing Nick Meyer to knock home Avant and Lagrange when he singled later that inning.
The Ironbirds eked ahead in the sixth when Nick Horvath hit a two-run homer that put his team in front 4–3, and added insurance by scoring one more run in the eighth.
The Cyclones narrowed the gap in the ninth after Medina singled in Meyer, who had doubled. But our boys failed to use that momentum to bring home the tieing and go-ahead runs, stranding Medina and Brooklyn son Manny Rodriguez — who had walked and moved to second on Medina’s single — on base when Avant grounded out to end the game.
The loss in Brooklyn’s first three-game series without a single win puts the Clones and Aberdeen in a second-place tie with 11-10 records each.
The Cyclones hope to fare better tonight when they face the hated Staten Island Yankees out on the Rock at 7 pm.
