Make it two sweeps in a row!
Cyclones pitchers Trent Johnson, Trey Cobb, and Ryan McAuliffe got torn to shreds on the mound, allowing 12 hits and 10 runs combined, as the Ironbirds blew out the Cyclones in the team’s seventh-straight loss.
Unbelievably, the Cyclones were the first to get on the board. Walter “Rabbi” Rasquin hit a lead-off single, then Dylan Snypes grounded out to advance Rasquin to third. Quinn Brodey then doubled to score Rasquin to make it 1–0.
Buy the Ironbirds were quick to take the lead. In the top of the second, Trevor Craport doubled before Ben Breazeale walked. Luke Ringhofer then doubled to score Craport and advance Brezeale to third. Jaylen Ferguson then grounded out to score Breazeale to make it 2–1.
The Ironbirds widened the gap in the next inning. Kevin Moesquit and T.J. Nichting hit consecutive singles before Mason McCoy hit a grounds rule double to score Moesquit and advance Nichting to third. Craport followed with a single to score both Nichting and McCoy to make it 5–1.
Things only got worse just a few innings later. McCoy and Craport led off the fifth with consecutive singles, then both advanced one base each on a passed ball. Garrett Copeland then hit a sacrifice fly to score McCoy before Ringhofer singled to score Craport to make it 7–1.
The Cyclones cut into the deficit in the next two innings. In the bottom of the fifth, Rasquin doubled before Jose Miguel “Funky Cold” Medina singled to score him. In the bottom of the sixth, Carl Stajduhar grounded into a double play with bases loaded and no outs to score Jeremy Vazquez to make it 7–3.
The Ironbirds wasted no time increasing their lead. McCoy led off the seventh with a single then Craport doubled to advance McCoy to third. Breazeale then cleared the bases when he smacked one out to left center field to make it 10–3.
The Cyclones made one last ditch effort. In the bottom of the ninth, the Clones had deja vu when Medina singled with Rasquin on second to score him, but that was all they got.
The loss puts the Cyclones at 15–40, which puts the team dead last in the McNamara Division and 15 games behind the next-worst team, the Hudson Valley Renegades. With this loss, the Cyclones are now one game away from being eliminated from playoff contention. The next closest team to being eliminated after our boys? The Batavia Muckdogs, who are 10 games away. But at this point, it would be nice if the Clones can just get to 20 wins.
So the Quest for 20 begins on the road tonight against the Tri-City ValleyCats at 7:00 pm.
