Good news and bad news for fans of Katina’s, the 24-hour diner on the corner of Seventh Avenue and 12th Street: The good news? Your favorite cheap scrambled eggs will soon return. The bad news? The diner will no longer be Katina’s.
The Stoop hears that Nicholas and John Kolosakas, brothers who run the New Purity Diner just five blocks north on Seventh Avenue, have bought Katina’s from its owner, Gus.
“It’s true,” said Gus, who neither gave his last name nor his tremendous moussaka recipe. “I’ve been on this corner for 15 years. It’s time for something new.”
Neighbors feared the worst when Katina’s closed “for renovations” in the fall, yet no renovations actually began.
The site saw a flurry of activity last week, as Gus got it ready for the sale. Upscale lighting was installed — a precursor of what is to come.
The new owners say that they will serve a similar menu as they do at the Purity, but may offer slightly fancier fare. They want the new restaurant to be more like an “upscale” coffee shop (because we all know how few of those there are in Park Slope!).
