It was okay to talk politics at this Thanksgiving table.
The Bay Democrats hosted a Thanksgiving lunch at Lights of Baku in Gravesend on Nov. 28 to celebrate their club and community members. The fall feast was all about bringing locals together to eat and discuss upcoming political events, said one elected official.
“It is very important for us to know each other, understand each other, and know we are one family,” said Margarita Kagan, a Democratic district leader and a member of the club. “We can do something for other families, other children.”
More than 30 locals attended the luncheon and dined on salad, bread, and turkey drenched in lemon juice. While they ate, a performer sang patriotic tunes such as “My Country, ’Tis of Thee” and “The Star-Spangled Banner” — as well as traditional Russian songs.
Between sets, elected officials grabbed the microphone and told locals to raise their voices in their own way— and to do that, one official urged them to vote in the next election.
“In order to have a good government, you need to participate,” said Ari Kagan — no relation to Margarita — another Democratic district leader and a member of the club.
The day inspired one local, who said this meal will be just the first course for her political future.
“It is something I figured I should do,” said Latric Boyd, who lives in Gravesend. “It is a great idea.”
