A police sergeant is dead after apparently turning his gun on himself inside his Bay Ridge home on April 12.

The off-duty officer’s wife found him with a single gunshot wound to the head at 3:43 pm in their home on Narrows Avenue near 71st Street, police said.

Police are not giving out the 48-year-old officer’s name, but the New York Post identified him as Sgt. James Fitzpatrick. He was an officer in the 84th Precinct.

A police spokeswoman could not immediately say whether the deceased had undergone any recent psychiatric evaluations. The department employs psychologists who “provide trauma debriefing, counseling and evaluation of members of the service following major incidences or during times of personal crisis; and evaluate investigative personnel for psychological fitness for specialized assignments,” according to the police department’s website.
