Talk about a tall ship!
A heavy ship is waiting in Gravesend Bay for its cranes to be lowered so it can pass under the Verrazano-Narrows Bridge.
The ship, which started its voyage over two months ago in Shanghai, China, is carrying four towering, 247-foot cranes, and has been waiting since April 23 for them to be lowered so it can pass under the bridge, according to a report in the Staten Island Advance.
The bridge allows boats up to 228 feet tall to pass beneath it, and the ship is now in the process of lowering the cranes before finishing its trip to Port Elizabeth, New Jersey, the report said.
Several ships hauling cranes have had to stop and reduce their height before passing under the bridge, but these are the biggest cranes ever to pass under the span, the report said — citing the New York president of the Sandy Hook Pilots Association, a maritime organization.
