The Cyclones were hungry like the Wolf!
Arizona native Jeremy Wolf was the difference for the Clones, doubling, stealing a base, and scoring a run all in one inning to help the Cyclones beat the Lake Monsters.
The Clones jumped out to a 1–0 lead in the top of the third when Franklin Correa’s single to right scored Cecilio Aybar. Ian Strom added to the lead in the fourth when he singled to center, scoring Carlos Sanchez.
Meanwhile, starter Trent “Magic” Johnson cruised into the fifth, giving up just one run on four hits while striking out four, and leaving with 2–1 lead.
The Wolf show began in the sixth, when the left-fielder’s one-out double to center scored Sanchez, who had walked, putting the Clones up 3–1. Wolf promptly stole third and came home on catcher Jordan Devencenzi’s throwing error to give the Clones a 4–1 lead.
The Monsters made it interesting in the bottom of the seventh when Jesus Lopez’s solo shot off reliever Yeizo Campos made it 4-2. But back-to-back doubles by Jesus Lage and Goddard couldn’t plate a runner as terrific throws by Jose Miguel Medina and Franklin Correa on Goddard’s drive nailed Lage at the plate.
The Clones added an insurance run in the ninth when a Reed Gamache single scored Leon Byrd to make it 5–2.
But the Monsters didn’t go quietly. In the bottom of the ninth, Lage’s two-out single scored Robert Bennie chasing Campos. Cyclones manager Edgardo Alfonzo called in closer Keaton Aldridge, who got Goddard to ground out to end the game, earning his first save.
This victory pushes the Cyclones record to 2–1 on the year — the team’s high-water mark, with twice as many wins as losses — and ties Brooklyn for first place in the McNamara Division with the Hudson Valley Renegades and the hated Staten Island Yankees.
The Cyclones go for a three-game sweep against the Lake Monsters tonight at 7 pm.
