An inferno that tore through a junk-filled apartment inside a Crown Heights housing complex on Wednesday injured eight people before firefighters stifled the flames.
More than 120 of New York’s Bravest rushed to battle the blaze that engulfed the 12th-floor unit in the Ebbets Field Apartments, which contained bric-a-brac stacked from floor to ceiling, according to our on-scene photographer Paul Martinka, who said firefighters threw debris from the smoldering apartment’s balcony as they fought back the flames.
The heroes spent nearly two hours extinguishing the fire at the Montgomery Street complex near Bedford Avenue after being called to the scene at 12:06 pm, a Fire Department spokesman said.
Paramedics rushed five complex residents to area hospitals for treatment to non-life-threatening injuries following the blaze, according to the spokesman, who said three firefighters also sustained minor injuries.
Fire marshals are still investigating the cause of the inferno, the spokesman said.
