The Cyclones’ bats powered a four-run rally late in the game, erasing a three-run deficit and beating the Ironbirds to snap a five-game losing streak.
Of course, this is a 2017 Cyclones game, so the win didn’t come easy. In fact, our boys were down 3–0 by the end of the first inning.
Cyclones starter Colin Holderman coughed up a dinger to T.J. Nichting with two on in the bottom of the first, scoring Mason McCoy and Ben Breazeale and giving Aberdeen a 3–0 lead.
Meanwhile, Aberdeen starter Zac Lowther cruised through six innings, holding our boys to no runs and four hits. But things changed in the seventh when Nick Gruener took the mound and got himself into a bases-loaded, one-out jam with Leon Byrd Jr. stepping up to the plate. Byrd batted the ball back to Gruener for what should have been a double play, but Gruener threw the ball away, allowing both Scott Manea and Franklin Correa to score. Reed Gamache then walked before Quinn Brodey singled to score both Cecilio Aybar and Byrd to take the lead.
With the win, Brooklyn stands at 13–27, which is still dead last in the McNamara Division, five-and-a-half games ahead of the Hudson Valley Renegades, whose matchup with the hated Staten Island Yankees was rained out, in the “Battle for the Basement.”
The Cyclones hope to take two out of three tonight at 7:05 pm in Aberdeen.
