Quinn Brodey’s grand slam highlighted a six-run rally in the eighth inning as the Cyclones came back to beat the Tigers and earn a fourth win in a row.
With the Tigers up 5–4 in the eighth, Jose Maria reached on a throwing error that put him on second base before Leon Byrd Jr. doubled him in to tie the game. After Edgardo Fermin and Jose Miguel “Funky Cold” Medina both walked to load the bases, Brodey’s bomb put the Clones up by four. Walter Rasquin then singled and stole second before Reed Gamache singled to score him, increasing the lead to five..
Connecticut answered with a run in the bottom of the eighth when Andres Thormes tripled to right and Luke Burch grounded out scored him, but that but the Cyclones’ bullpen didn’t spring any other leaks.
Cyclones pitcher Gunnar Kines continued his solid play, allowing just two runs and six hits while striking out seven in four-and-one-third innings in relief to get the win, making him 2–2 on the season
Brodey’s dinger was the team’s first since Carl Stadjuhar hit one against the hated Staten Island Yankees back on July 8. The team has hit just five long balls in 31 games this season. The Yankees, meanwhile, have 11 as a team, with four coming from slugging right-fielder Timmy Robinson
The win, combined with a Hudson Valley loss, puts the Renegades a mere two-and-a-half games behind the Cyclones in the battle for last place in the McNamara Division.
The Cyclones look to sweep Connecticut tonight at 7:05 in the Land of Steady Habits.
