A 9-year-old girl is in serious but stable condition after being hit by a car in Gravesend on Dec. 11.

Police say the driver of a 2010 Chevrolet Malibu hit the girl on Avenue U and McDonald Avenue at 5:30 pm. Authorities said the driver stayed on the scene.

There were conflicting reports of how the incident occurred.

A spokesman for the police department said the girl darted into the road when she did not have the right-of-way.

“The girl suddenly ran across Avenue U,” said the police spokesman. “It was against the traffic signal and outside of the crosswalk.”

But a woman who claimed to be an eyewitness to the incident and called 911 to report it, said that the little girl was in the crosswalk and was simply following a group of adults who were walking across the street.

“She was in the crosswalk — I was watching here,” said Karin, who declined to give her last name. “She was behind grownups ahead of her who had okayed going.”

The child was transported to Lutheran Medical Center and was later transferred to the Cohen’s Children’s Medical Center in Long Island.
