Well… that is one way to win the game.
Reed Gamache scored the winning run in the 11th inning when Ironbirds shortstop Mason McCoy made a throwing error on a failed double play attempt as the Cyclones toppled the Ironbirds in the longest game of the season.
Our boys were up 1–0 when the umpires had stopped the game with runners on first and second at the top of the sixth because of a downpour. When the game started up again after a nearly two-hour delay, Ben Breazeale doubled to score Jean Carrilo and put Mason McCoy on third. Ryan Ripken then grounded out to score McCoy and put Breazeale on third before Markel Jones singled to score Breazeale to make it 3–1.
The Cyclones responded in the bottom of the inning. After Quinn “Chief” Brodey singled to right, Reed Gamache doubled to score the Chief. Jose Maria followed with another double to score Gamache and tie the game.
It took the Cyclones five more innings to end the game. Gamache led off the 11th with a single and advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt by Ricardo Cespedes. After Maria was hit by a pitch, Carlos Sanchez grounded into what looked like a routine double play, but McCoy’s relay throw was wild, allowing Gamache to score, giving the Cyclones the win.
Cyclones’ starter Marty Anderson allowed just one hit and two runs while fanning eight Ironbirds in five innings before leaving because of the rain.
Manager Edgardo Alfonzo praised Anderson for his performance and wished the rain delay hadn’t gotten in his way
“Marty did tremendous today. He went strong and really attacked the hitters,” Fonzie said. “It’s different when he plays like that. He made it tough for the hitters but it’s too bad we had that delay.”
The long rain-delay and extra innings made the game go for five hours. The last time the Clones played for that long was during last year’s 20-inning season opener.
This win puts our boys at 12–22, last in the McNamara Divsion and three-and-a-half games ahead of the Hudson Valley Renegades in the Battle for the Basement.
The Cyclones hope to win in a much shorter time frame today at 11:30 am at MCU Park.
