A first-inning rally got the Cyclones going, giving them the energy they needed to dominate the Crosscutters on Sunday.
With the bases loaded in the first, Chase Chambers, who currently holds the sixth-best batting average in the New York-Penn League, smacked a ground rule double to left, driving in Jose Miguel Medina and Carlos Cortes, who had walked and singled. Wagner Lagrange then flew out to drive in Walter Rasquin, who had singled.
“Every time you get ahead on the score it’s a plus for our pitcher,” manager Edgardo Alfonzo said after the game. “They get more confidence. But I don’t say after you score three runs you lay back and you win the game, it’s not like that, you keep fighting until the end. It’s better to score first in the game, you have the chance to keep attacking.”
Williamsport stayed alive, scoring one in the third and another in the fifth.
Brooklyn added to the lead in the fourth, when Medina popped a sacrifice fly to drive in Anthony Dirocie, who had been hit by a pitch and moved to third on a single.
After scoring one in the fifth, the Clones tacked on another in the seventh, when Kevin Hall smacked a base hit to drive in Wagner Lagrange, who had singled.
Starting pitcher Kyle Wilson struck out four and walked four, allowing two runs and four hits over five innings, before handing it over to Billy Oxford, Josh Walker and Yeudy Colon who kept Williamsport at two.
“They’ve been doing pretty good,” Alfonzo said of the bullpen. “Hopefully the starting guy can go more than five innings.”
Game notes
An insult hurled by an unspecified player caused both teams to empty the dugouts right at the end of the game. No physical altercations occurred. “The emotion is going a little bit more than it’s supposed to,” Alfonzo said. “They’re kids, we have to teach them to play.”
