The Cyclones held off a late surge by the Renegades beating Hudson Valley for the first time since the 2016 season.
The Clones were up 6–0 by the top of the third inning, scoring one in the first on a squeeze bunt by Jose Brizuela, and five more in the second thanks to a triple by Jose Miquel Medina, who went 4-for-5, that scored Oliver “The Programmer” Pascual, followed by four unearned runs.
The Clones tacked on a run in the sixth on a single by Brizuela, and one more in the seventh on a Chandler Avant double, putting our boys up 9–0 before the rains came, delaying the game for about an hour and waking up the Renegades back when play resumed.
Two wild Cyclones relievers gave up three runs in the eighth and three more in the ninth making things close, but closer “Big” Mac Lozer got Erik Ostberg to line out to right to end the game.
Manager Edgardo Alfonzo said he’s not worried about the bullpen, even though it has gotten the Clones in trouble more than once this season.
“Every time you walk a guy you get in trouble,” Alfonzo said. “That’s what happened tonight. But the rest of the guys did a great job.”
The Cyclones lost every game to the Renegades last season, putting up an 0–9 against them.
Brooklyn’s Boys of Summer hope to do it again tonight at MCU Park at 7 pm.
