Coney toilets to get a boost

Nowhere to go! Coney bathrooms won’t be ready for Memorial Day

Call it a bathroom over troubled waters.

Coney Island beachgoers heeding nature’s call will be relieving themselves more than 13 feet in the air this summer, according to new Parks Department designs.

The new commodes on the Boardwalk at W. Eighth Street will be perched atop concrete columns to keep them clear of a storm surge like the one that wrecked the old lavatories during Hurricane Sandy. They will also come with an array of new features, including skylights, solar panels, and ramps for the disabled, and will join Tom’s Restaurant and Grimaldi’s Pizzeria on the growing list of year-round attractions in the People’s Playground.

“The new modular buildings are vastly superior to the structures they are replacing,” said city spokeswoman Megan Lalor.

Lalor said that modular units — prefabricated off-site — will open for business on May 25. Similar high water closets will also rise up in Staten Island and the Rockaways.
