A fourth-inning rally that erased a 5–1 deficit went for naught because our boys mustered only two hits the rest of the game as the Ironbirds handed them their second straight loss.
The Cyclones slowly but surely chipped away at their four-run deficit in the fourth. With runners on second and first, Walter “Rabbi” Rasquin singled to score Jose Miguel “Funky Cold” Medina. After Scott “Hit” Manea was hit by a pitch, Ricardo Cespedes singled to score Quinn “Chief” Brodey and Rasquin. And after Franklin Correa singled to load the bases, Jeremy Wolf singled to score Manea.
The Ironbirds then substituted Tobias Myers with Max Knutson to stop the rally, but the Cyclones weren’t finished. Dylan Snypes singled in Cespedes, then Brodey singled home Correa as the Cyclones took a 7–5 lead.
But the lead wouldn’t last long.
Ironbird Jaylen Ferguson doubled to lead off the fifth before Irving Ortega tripled to score Ferguson. Ben Breazeale then singled to score Ortega to tie the game at seven.
Things took a turn for the worse when Jean Cirillo hit a sacrifice fly to score Trevor Craport in the sixth, then in the next inning Breazeale singled to score Kirvin Moesquit from second and Markel Jones doubled to score Breazeale.
Manager Edgardo Alfonzo was frustrated with the loss since the Cyclones have shown improvement in the last week or so.
“It is painful especially the way we are playing right now,” Fonzie said. “To let the game go that way, it’s frustrating because we’ve played so great.”
This loss keeps the Cyclones in the division cellar, and they are now three-and-a-half games ahead of the Hudson Valley Renegades in the Battle for the Basement.
The Cyclones hope to not play like the last-place team they are tonight at 7 pm at MCU Park, weather permitting.
