How did we ever win six?

The Cyclones’ train wreck of a season continued last night as our boys fell for the 18th time, this time to the Spikes.

Cyclones hurler Martin Anderson had an enigmatic first start as a pro, surrendering two runs on four hits while walking three and hitting two batters in four innings, and the Clones bats, as usual, failed to garner enough run support for, like, the 18th time.

The Spikes jumped out to an early lead in the third when Joshua Lopez singled to score Zach Kirtley and Matt Davis scored on a wild pitch before Stanley Espinal grounded out with runners on the corners, scoring Scott Hurst and making it 3–0.

But the Clones came roaring back in the bottom of the fifth. After Walter Rasquin doubled to score Dylan Snipes and put Cecilio Aybar on third, walks to Matt Winaker and Quinn Brodey scored Aybar to make it 3–2.

The Spikes got an important insurance run in the ninth off Cecillo Aybar when Hurst doubled to score Edwin Figuera, increasing their lead to two.

That made all the difference in the game as the Cyclones cut the deficit to one in bottom of the inning when Dylan Snypes scored on a Winaker force out, but that was all the boys could muster.

The team’s inability to drive home runners in scoring position was on the mind of manager Edgardo Alfonzo after the game.

“We had a man on second with no outs but we couldn’t score,” Fonzie said. “Those are the little things that we have to correct and put in the right place.”

And it is time to tell it like it is, sports fans. This is the most wretched start to the season we have seen in 20 years, and possibly the worst Brooklyn team in half a century. Where are the great Cyclones players of yesteryear? Where are the Footsie Blakes, The Digger O’Dells, the Gus Palowitzes? Is the modern athlete a pale imitation of the great old warriors? Only Walter Rasquin, who has a 14-game hit streak, stands out this year, begging the question “What are these boys thinking about?”, because it sure ain’t baseball.

The Cyclones hope to snap a four-game losing streak when they face the Spikes again tonight at 6 pm at MCU Park.
