Don’t look now but our boys have won three of their last four games!
Cyclones’ pitchers Marty Anderson, Marcel Renteria, and Cannon Chadwick combined to strike out 12 and with Walter Rasquin’s three hits and two runs, led the Cyclones past the evil empire for the team’s second straight win — but it took until the sixth inning to take control of the game.
The Yankees got on the board in the first on just one hit when Oswaldo Cabrera led off with a double, Wilkerman Garcia’s fly ball sent him to third, and a Dom Thompson-Williams ground out scored him.
It stayed that way until the sixth when Reed Gamache walked and Rasquin doubled him to third. Scott Manea’s single scored Gamache before Edgardo Fermin singled in Rasquin, giving the Cyclones a 2–1 lead.
The Clones distanced themselves a little more in the eighth when Rasquin doubled to left and Manea and Fermin were walked to load the bases. Leon Byrd Jr. was hit by a pitch to increase the Cyclones’ lead.
Manager Edgardo Alfonzo hopes that this win, along with team’s past few victories, will help his players’ confidence moving forward.
“I hope the guys have a good taste of what it’s like to win and play games like that,” Fonzie said. “Hopefully that will motivate them to keep doing it.”
Anderson, who allowed one run and five hits while striking out five, echoed Fonzie’s sentiments, believing that winning this series against their division rival will do a lot of good for them in the long-term.
“Going after the number one team in the league, that was a big momentum builder for our rotation and for our hitters,” Anderson said. “It should follow through for the rest of the season, continuing with the wins and with the hits and putting everything together.”
This is the first series win for the Cyclones since the team took two out of three against the Vermont Lake Monsters back in June, but our boys remain dead last in the McNamara Division.
The Cyclones hope to keep the momentum going when they visit the Connecticut Tigers tonight at 7 pm.
