For single men and women looking for someone special to smooch on New Year’s Eve, Union Hall is here to help — with a boozy board game singles night that comes just a few days before the dawn of 2014. And according to the event’s organizer, you never know who you might meet over a game of Scattergories.
“I have people who have gotten married through events that I’ve had before,” said Mary Cantazaro, who believes that romance-themed versions of games like trivia, charades, and Pictionary are a revealing way to vet potential love interests. After all, in family-friendly Park Slope, what better way to meet a future co-parent than seeing how they handle the stress of game night?
“It’s a good, fun way to meet people instead of just going to a bar and hanging out,” she said.
Teams will be switched up throughout the night, giving singles the opportunity to see how good that hottie holding the India Pale Ale is at miming out the title of “When Harry Met Sally.” You could not only score the digits of some sexy singles, but also prizes like event tickets and free drinks.
It is a formula that Cantazaro has perfected, after planning events for companies and private parties at POGO Events for many years. This singles party is likely the first in a series, she said — future versions of the event will be targeted at gay and lesbian singles and other specific demographics.
For now, the board game night is open to every gender, age, and sexual orientation. Romantics, however, will have an edge, since all the games have a theme of “love” — so expect rom-coms and classic couples to figure strongly in the challenges.
“It’s not specifically gay or specifically straight,” Cantazaro said. “It’s specifically someone for New Year’s.”
