An assault in Bushwick that left a 54-year-old man dead last month has been deemed a homicide, cops said Saturday.

According to authorities, officers responded to a 911 call of a male attacked outside of a residence on Starr Street at around 5:30 p.m. on June 5. Upon arrival, police found the 54-year-old — whom they identified as Carlos Guzman Espinoza — with trauma to this head.

Paramedics brought the man to Wyckoff Heights Medical Center, where he succumbed to his injuries one week later on June 12.

On July 29, cops announced the ongoing investigation had been deemed a homicide and that no arrests have been made yet.

Witnesses to the incident previously told New York Daily News that Espinoza had been involved in a dispute with another man that allegedly turned violent. It’s reported that the suspect struck Espinoza, causing him to fall back and hit his head on the pavement.

Between Jan. 1 and Jul. 30, when the most recent NYPD data is available, there had been 226 felony assaults and two murders in the 83rd Police Precinct. When compared to the same seven-month period last year, reported murders are on par with 2023 while reported felonies are up from 199 — a 30% increase.
