Driver arrested after striking pedestrian at dangerous Ridge intersection

A 69-year-old man was arrested and charged after he struck a 30-year-old woman with his car at Dahlgren Place and 86th Street in Bay Ridge on Dec. 5.

The driver was driving his 2009 Ford on 86th Street towards the Gowanus Expressway when he tried to make a right turn onto Dahlgren Place — which doubles as an entrance to the expressway — when he struck the woman, who was crossing the street. Emergency medical personnel transported the woman to Lutheran Hospital in critical condition.

The driver was charged with failure to yield to a pedestrian and failure to exercise due care.

The intersection is known among locals as dangerous. In 2006, the New York Times published a story charging that its location as an entry point to the highway doubled with its faulty traffic light made it especially hazardous.
