Dumb new rule sinks Cyclones

Hudson Valley 8

Cyclones 7

June 20 at MCU Park

The Cyclones fell to the Hudson Valley Renegades in the 10th inning Wednesday, thanks in part to a new rule Minor League Baseball put in place to shorten games.

The rule states that each extra inning will start with a runner on second. That benefited the Renegades Wednesday when free-runner Bryce Brown, who advanced to third on a passed ball, was driven in on a sacrifice fly by Ford Proctor to score the winning run.

Cyclones manager Edgardo Alfonzo was short on words about the new rule after the game.

“It is what it is,” the skipper said. “If they want to speed the game up, I guess we’ll have to deal with it.”

But it wasn’t just the rule that took a bite out of the Clones.

Brooklyn had been up 7–5 in the top of the ninth until Hudson Valley catcher Chris Betts hit a two run homer to tie it up. The Cyclones couldn’t put another run on in the bottom, and after Hudson Valley took the lead in the 10th, the Clones failed to score their free-runner in extra innings.

Our boys head to Connecticut today to take on the Tigers tonight.
