Eleven people are facing more than 250 charges after cops busted an alleged drug ring trafficking heroin, cocaine, and a dangerous synthetic opioid across Southern Brooklyn.
The District Attorney’s Office handed down a 273-count indictment on Jan. 31 including felony drug charges for their alleged operation of a drug trafficking ring mainly in Sheepshead Bay, Coney Island, and Gerritsen Beach, accusing the group of peddling thousands of dollars’ worth of cocaine, heroin, and heroin laced with the synthetic opioid fentanyl — an unpredictable cocktail notorious for causing deadly overdoses.
“This indictment reflects our continuing commitment to fighting the burgeoning scourge of opioid addiction that is spreading to too many of our neighborhoods,” said District Attorney Eric Gonzalez. “These drug dealers profit from selling dangerous drugs while destroying lives and futures.”
Between June 2017 and January of this year, the gang sold about $17,000 worth of drugs per week, according to prosecutors. The alleged members of the ring come from Midwood, East New York, Coney Island, Bedford-Stuyvestant, Sunset Park, and Staten Island. The drug-running operation also extended into Sunset Park, Bay Ridge, and Staten Island, police said.
Police also confiscated almost $500,000 in cash, in addition to around one and a half kilos of heroin and half a kilo of cocaine while executing search warrants related to the case.
The 11 people were arrested on Jan. 31 and arraigned the same day. They are due to return to court on March 23.
The alleged ringleader of the crew, a 35-year-old Coney Island man, also faces a charge of operating as a major drug trafficker, which could mean up to 30 years in prison. The other charges carry penalties up to 25 years in prison.
