A con artist stole $1,700 from a Kings Highway resident on April 2.
The liar called the victim, posing as a Social Security office official, and demanded that the victim send money in the form of gift cards or they would be arrested. The victim purchased 15 gift cards at three locations between 7 p.m. and 9:30 p.m., and texted the information to the fraud’s phone number, according to cops.
Finder’s keepers
An opportune thief used a lost credit card to make an $179 purchase at an Avenue U shopping mall on April 3.
The victim told police he lost his wallet while shopping at the mall between E. 55th Street and Flatbush Avenue. The punk picked up the wallet, which also contained a driver’s licence and cash, and used the card at a clothing store at 7 p.m., said cops.
Banker baddie
A fraudster used an E. 46th Street woman’s personal information to open a bank account in her name and make $3,295 worth of charges on March 13.
The 75-year-old victim, who lives between Avenues L and M, told police she was alerted to the charges by a debt collection agency on March 5. She told authorities that she had not opened the account or made the charges, according to cops.
Backpack burglar
A filcher stole $1,630 from a man’s backpack in his apartment building on Avenue L on April 5.
The victim left the bag in the common area of the building between E. 35th and E. 36th streets around 10 a.m., and returned to find his cash gone, said cops.
Shop grifters
Police arrested several suspects accused of shoplifting at an Avenue U shopping center in three separate incidents this week. Here’s the rundown:
• Officers arrested two suspects at the mall between E. 55th Street and Flatbush Avenue on April 6 for attempting to steal $1,222 from a clothing store shortly after 5:30 p.m. Store security stopped the pair, and cops arrived and arrested them at 5:42 p.m., according to authorities.
• Cops cuffed a 28-year-old woman who they say tried to walk off with an ill-gotten $1,864 worth of clothes, jewelry, and makeup on April 2 at approximately 12:30 p.m. Authorities tracked down the woman and arrested her later that day, according to the police report.
• Police arrested a 45-year-old woman for placing $1,903 worth of clothes in her bag and attempting to flee on April 6 at 11:15 p.m. Cops arrested her at 11:37 p.m., according to police.
