She’s wiping the slate clean in Coney Island.
Democratic political newcomer Mathylde Frontus is headed to Albany to fill the vacant Assembly seat representing her native neighborhood, after defeating her Republican opponent Steven Saperstein on Tuesday, winning 14,750 votes to his 11,823.
Frontus, a professor of social work who became the blue party’s nominee by winning 51 more votes than her competitor in September’s primary, will also govern over parts of Bay Ridge, Dyker Heights, Bath Beach, and Gravesend as the new representative for the state’s 46th Assembly District.
She campaigned on an anti-corruption platform against the legacy left by her disgraced predecessor Pamela Harris, whom a judge last month sent to prison for six months after she was convicted of stealing thousands of dollars of money meant for superstorm Sandy–relief.
Frontus also promised to tackle such issues as curbing gun violence, by organizing programs led by local leaders including clergy, teachers, and law-enforcement officers, and reforming area classrooms, by fighting for more funding from the state.
She also supports the Public Officers Accountability Act, which would mandate the governor and legislators disclose their funding sources and would establish a commission on conduct, among other measures, if passed.
