The E. 49th and E. 48th Street Block Association held its annual awards gala at the Seventh-Day Adventist Church on Nov. 13, where members honored politicians, police officers, and community members for their hard work and dedication.

“This is probably the better part of my job,” said detective Robert Thybulle, who was honored that night. “Putting everything aside and kind of enjoying the night.”

The evening opened with speeches from block association president Gail Dixon, who was followed by Councilman Jumaane Williams and Assemblyman Karim Camara, who both received awards for doing their work as elected officials.

Among those honored was golden girl Jean Bristol, who, at 89 years young, is the association’s oldest member and, for the past 10 years, among its hardest working contributors.

After the awards the evening evolved into a casual meet-and-greet, filled with good neighbors and good finger food.

“It was really a nice night,” the detective said. “Usually they talk business, but we put that aside until next month and had good time instead.”
