Public Advocate Letitia James is hosting a job fair at the Shorefront Y in Brighton Beach on Jan. 17. Eager job-seekers can hand their polished resumes to prospective employers from the city, state, and various trade unions — and learn about the ins and outs of working for government agencies.
Finding a job is tough in many working-class sections of Southern Brooklyn, where the city recently closed a job center and where unemployment rates exceed the county, city, and state averages.
James wanted to focus specifically on Southern Brooklyn, she said.
“After hearing from many constituents, we realized that the problem is particularly acute in many areas of South Brooklyn, resulting in high unemployment and poverty rates,” she said. “This job fair will provide New Yorkers with direct access to government agencies and companies who are offering the fair and stable jobs they are seeking.”
About 10 employers will be ready to take resumes and answer questions, including the city’s police and fire departments, the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey, New York State Department of Civil Service, New York State Department of Labor, New York Life, and the Small Business Alliance.
