An 8-year-old girl was shot in the head when a man shot a gun during an argument in Canarsie on Feb. 26, according to police.

Police said they received the 911 call from the corner of E. 83rd Street and Flatlands Avenue around 6:20 pm about a dispute involving gunfire.

“Officers responded to a dispute and found her with a gunshot wound to the head,” a police spokeswoman said. “She was conscious and alert.”

The girl was rushed to Brookdale Hospital in stable consition, and her injuries were not considered life-threatening, police said.

“She’s expected to survive,” said a police spokesman.

The shooting occurred while the van the girl was riding in was stopped at a red light. A group of men were having a argument nearby, and one of them fired a gun, according to police. The girl was not involved in the fight, and appears to have been hit by a ricochet, police said.

“It looks like it was later determined that she was struck by a bullet fragment in the head,” a police spokeswoman said.

Police arrested a Canarsie man later that evening. He was charged with attempted murder, reckless endangerment, and criminal possession of a weapon, according to the spokeswoman.
