Watch out Church Avenue, the graffiti patrol is on the watch.
A crew of 18 do-gooding neighbors cleaned up vandalism on the bustling avenue over the weekend — all volunteers happily giving their time to beautify the neighborhood.
“I live in the community and I want to see it thrive,” said resident Stacey Gayle, who helped the crew by painting over the ugly tags. “Litter, graffiti, everything as a whole, make constant problems in the area because it’s so heavily populated with the train and the bus route.”
Graffiti has been used to disseminate political messages or display impromptu works of art, but volunteers on Saturday said they were dealing with vandalism, plain and simple.
“There was nothing questionably artistic that we covered up,” said Lauren Elvers Collins, the executive director of the Church Avenue Business Improvement District, which sponsored the event along with the Flatbush Development Corporation. “We had some street art that other people did and we’re not touching that.”
The gang of good-doers painted over 10 pieces of ugly scrawl on the avenue over the weekend, but said that much of the work remained to be done.
“It’s not just something we cleaned up this Saturday,” said Gayle. “But it’s something we can resolve.”
