Halloween is and has always been a very popular holiday. But it is not really a holiday and I am proposing that it become one, a legal one. Outside of Christmas, where home decorations have become big, big, BIG business; Halloween too is creeping up popularity wise, business wise and craze wise. Ask any parent whose Goblins have driven them crazy finding the right costume. Ask any parent whose searches included the internet, driving to different malls, including those in neighboring states, checking out all the department as well as toy stores, to pick out “the” costume that some manufacturer has already distributed in the millions. This also applies to wigs, masks, make-up, costume accessories, swords, tridents, and what have you or might need. Seek and you shall find%u2026eventually!
Not only children are crazed with their costumes, but so are the adults that go trick or treating in matching costumes with their children in their “X- Man” character, witch, vampire, wolfman, Cinderella, Little Mermaid, Sleeping Beauty, or any Disney character, past, present and future. If the costume was used only once for trick or treating, boy, some social skills need to be honed. There are often school parties, before and after school, friend parties, building parties, family parties%u2026my daughter Dana always hooks up her daughter Vanessa’s birthday with a Halloween party requiring adults to wear costumes. This year I decided to go as the Invisible Man with my wife the Invisible Woman. Of course I could have narrowed it down by claiming to be the Largest Invisible Man, but I’m too humble.
Now you’re probably wondering how I accomplished the Invisible Man costume. There are several ways, I’m only going to mention one and you can research the others. Wear an oversized jacket that goes over your head and put a taped face over it, with you beneath it. The taped face can reveal empty eye sockets, nose and mouth, and if you really are ambitious, you can start unveiling the tape until there is nothing left.
I always participated in Halloween with the most comfortable and realistic costumes: A little Miss Piggy costume, which was very popular years ago, full Zorro costume with hat, authentic sword, long cape, shorter cape, knee high boots and mask or black kerchief, missing was a horse. When I was in the Army, I worked for Fred Astaire’s Dance Studio in Newport News, Virginia when I was off duty. I asked my Aunt Christina in Brooklyn to make me a big black cape to use for Dracula and also for Zorro. I still own that cape and had another one made that is actually too tall for me. Needless to say both capes are used every year. I also have a Roman Emperor costume, owned a Grecian athlete costume, had a Caveman outfit even before the Flintstones. But this year’s costume was the most brillaint and undoubtedly the most comfortable.
Sharon and I simply wore matching signs saying.
“INVISIBLE MAN
If you can see me or read this, then obviously my invisibility is malfunctioning
SORRY
Have you seen my wife?”
So we didn’t spend too much time or money. Which is more than I can say for the others at the party.
Costumes can cost as much as $200 and as little as your ingenuity can drum up.
Halloween is big business, millions of dollars are made. Parents spend time galore getting or thinking up “the” costume and that’s only assuming one child. Pity the poor Mom with three, or more.
So for all the time, money and effort exerted for this holiday, I propose to make it a national holiday so Mom can rest,
Screech at you next week!
