Hit-and-run driver fatally strikes pedestrian in Bensonhurst

Cops are searching for the driver who fled the scene after fatally striking a pedestrian in Bensonhurst on Sunday.

The motorist behind the wheel of a black sedan was driving southbound on 19th Avenue at around 7:25 am, when they smashed into 26-year-old Jose Contla near 86th Street, according to police. 

First responders found Contla unconscious on the sidewalk with severe trauma to the body, and rushed him to Maimonides Medical Center, where doctors pronounced him dead, according to authorities. 

Surveillance video from a nearby home shows the driver speeding off after the crash along 19th Avenue. 

No arrests have yet been made, and the investigation remains ongoing.
