It’s a weekend of music and meteors in Bay Ridge!
On Friday, dance on over to the Danish Athletic Club (735 65th St. between Seventh and Eighth avenues) for a musical tribute to Bing Crosby. Crooner Martin McQuade will honor the 40th anniversary of the Danish-American “old groaner” passing away by serenading the audience with some of his most famous hits, including “Cheek to Cheek,” “Let Me Call You Sweetheart,” and “White Christmas,” while Dan Furman accompanies on the piano. The free three-hour show kicks off at 8:30 pm, and although the Club’s dinner reservations stop at 8 pm, the bar will be open all night.
On Saturday night, take a stroll to the Greenhouse Café (7717 Third Ave. between 77th and 78th streets) to listen to tunes from the other side of the North Sea when London Fogg takes the stage for a free 10 pm show. The seven-piece Staten Island band plays hits from the ’60s to the ’80s, singing the tunes of legendary Brit bands (with occasional Yankee exceptions) including the Rolling Stones, the Beatles, and the Eagles, among others.
And on Sunday, rest your ears while your eyes do the work — catch sight of the annual Orionoid meteor shower from Owl’s Head Park (68th Street and Colonial Road). The Urban Park Rangers will have binoculars and telescopes on hand to help Ridgites spot the Orionoid meteors — the debris left in the wake of the famous Comet Halley. This year, the meteors are supposed to be the most visible on Sunday, the middle of the three-day period when the Earth passes through the stream of the comet’s debris. Starting at 8 pm, park rangers will show Ridgites how to spot these fast and faint meteors, which typically flash across the sky about 20 times an hour, traveling 41 miles per second, and the rangers will add tidbits of science, history, and folklore to enhance the astronomical experience.
