Three cheers for Maimonides Medical Center for being on the cutting-edge of patient comfort and safety. There have always been individuals who for whatever reason need to avoid the use of blood transfusions. So what is a hospital to do? Maimonides established a bloodless program about 10 years ago to meet the needs of those patients that were not able to get a transfusion, but still needed to have surgery, explained Dr. Richard Slatkin, the program founder and director.
“We wanted to provide the highest level of care for patients who objected to the use of transfusions, so we allocated time and resources to training a dedicated group of clinicians to perform surgeries without transfusions,” he said. “It turns out this was only the beginning of a whole new approach that impacts all patients.”
Now the Center for Bloodless Medicine and Surgery is setting new standards for excellence in patient safety and outcomes.
A very grateful patient Claudene West (inset), who need a C-section, shared her experiences.
“It was such a relief to me and my family that Dr. Slatkin was willing to perform my high-risk surgery without transfusions,” she said. “He and his team made every step of the way less stressful for us.”
Now she has a beautiful son, and Dr. Slatikin to thank for him.

“60 West End Ave. is historically significant in the areas of ethnic history and religion as a mid-20th century synagogue surviving in Brooklyn,” said an agency official. “Its design by Brooklyn architect Jacob W. Sherman reflects developments in Bauhaus-influenced European synagogues of the 1930s.”

A Standing O is dispatched to Shaunessy Leandrea Caine, a solution specialist who received the Verizon Wireless President’s Cabinet Award, the company’s highest honor for sales and customer service.
Standing O pal Shaunessy was one of 11 Verizon Wireless employees to receive the prestigious award in the New York metro region.
Shaunessy said that her mom was her true inspiration.
“Watching my mother work hard to provide for me as I grew into an independent woman, is why I am successful and why I work so hard,” she said. “I try to be the best in every position I hold.”
Shaunessy’s first job was at McDonalds at the age of 16.
“I was so excited that I would finally be able to make my own money,” she added. “I believe in working with integrity and I always look to be of assistance to others while accomplishing my personal goals.”
Shaunessy can now add a Standing O to the list.
