The faithful flocked to the streets to hail their Blessed Mother as the Catholic Feast of Our Lady of Mount Carmel got underway in Bergen Beach.
Worshippers stepped in line behind a parish consortium from St. Bernard’s Church as it transported an elaborate statue of the Mary Madonna along East 69th Street and Veteran’s Avenue for a mile-long street procession before returning to the church.
The procession was part of a four-day street spectacle, sponsored by the Gioiosa Marina Social Club, to honor the patron saint.
Our Lady of Mount Carmel is a title given to Mary, the mother of Jesus, in honor of her having given the Scapular of Our Lady of Mount Carmel to Saint Simon Stock.
