The shows must go on!
Movies will return to East River State Park this summer, but you might want to leave the rugrats at home.
Less than a week after a group that showed free kids movies on the waterfront nixed its plans to screen films at the Williamsburg park, a new group says it will start its own series featuring films that don’t just have the kiddies in mind.
“While the kids’ movies were fun, I missed the adult movies,” said Ryan Kuonen, of Neighbors Allied for Good Growth which, starting on June 24, will feature films including the James Bond flick “Skyfall,” last year’s Academy Award-nominated “Life of Pi,” and the Pixar classic —and PG-rated — “Up.”
Good Growth has brought in a sponsor, the restaurant Biba, which will pay the expenses for running the series, and will also run a concession stand in the park during the films, said Kuonen.
The group has screened movies in Williamsburg in the past, but they were all local documentaries with a political bent. This will be the organization’s first time showing mainstream films. “The state has a list of movies that [it] will approve,” said Kuonen.
The state also announced that this summer it will have staff-run playtimes for children at the park, but it has not yet announced the exact dates and times.
The state parks department did not return calls for comment.
The first movie, “Despicable Me,” will start at 8:30 pm on Monday, June 24.
Williamsburg Summer Movies, East River State Park, Kent Avenue and North Eighth Street, Monday nights from 6pm –10:30pm, from June 24 to July 29, movies start at 8:30 pm.
