In addition to a new and much taller mayor in City Hall, the Council will be getting some new faces as well.
Amid the hoopla of a runaway DeBlasio victory in Tuesday night’s general election, it was easy to forget that several newly minted councilmembers will be replacing some long-standing incumbents, in large part because their real victory took place in September’s Democratic primary.
Most are taking over for incumbents forced out by term limits — such as Mark Treyger, who will replace Councilman Domenic Recchia (D–Coney Island) after defeating Tea Party Republican Andy Sullivan 71 percent –27 percent on Tuesday.
Assemblyman Alan Maisel (D–Canarsie) won a thumping 60-point victory over Republican Anthony Testaverde to replace Councilman Lew Fidler (D–Flatlands).
Chaim Deutsch’s race against Republican David Storobin was more of a nail-biter, but he still won the right to replace his boss, Councilman Michael Nelson (D–Sheepshead Bay), by double digits.
In Sunset Park, Carlos Menchaca — who defeated two-term incumbent Sara Gonzalez (D–Red Hook) in September’s primary — cruised to victory over Conservative Party candidate Henry Lallave.
Across town in Williamsburg, Antonio Reynoso sealed the deal to replace his former boss, Councilwoman Diana Reyna (D– Williamsburg), by taking 96 percent of the votes over School Choice Party foe Glays Santiago’s four. Again, the real drama was in September when Reynoso put the final kibosh on disgraced former borough Democratic boss Vito Lopez’s comeback hopes by a 12-percent margin.
In Fort Greene, Laurie Cumbo had the ballot all to herself on Tuesday after a primary win in a heated five-way race to fill the shoes of outgoing Councilwoman — and Public Advocate-elect Letitia James (D–Fort Greene).
