Let the games begin!
Locals and elected officials held a ribbon cutting ceremony at the newly renovated Colonel David Marcus Park in Midwood on Dec. 30.
The playground restorations — which include renovated basketball and handball courts — will improve the playspace for community members of all ages, according to one elected official who allocated $850,000 in funding for the work.
“Our parks benefit every single New Yorker, from the small toddler exploring a tot lot, to our seniors who can enjoy space to walk and socialize with their neighbors,” said Councilman David Greenfield (D–Midwood), who added that he hopes the playground is well maintained. “We must keep these important public spaces updated and safe for use.”
In addition to the new basketball court and repaired handball courts, the renovations of the park on Avenue P between East Fourth and East Fifth streets also included new benches and an updated drainage system. Greenfield said he has also allocated addition funds to the Parks Department to upgrade the playground equipment and comfort station, which is scheduled to begin the design process in 2015.
“I am proud to have been able to secure funding to upgrade these well-used handball and basketball courts, and look forward to working with the Parks Department on the next improvements to Colonel David Marcus Park,” he said.
Everyone wins with the new courts, said the borough’s parks commissioner, who added that the public should be on the lookout for even more improvements.
“Thanks to this support, Colonel David Marcus Playground is a vital center for community fitness and recreation, and will continue to see even more upgrades in the coming year,” said Brooklyn Parks Commissioner Kevin Jeffrey.
