They just did it.
Athletic apparel empire Nike has opened a temporary indoor skate park in an abandoned Williamsburg car wash — meaning local skaters can now ollie and kick-flip their way through the dreary winter months while the city’s outdoor ramps are frozen over.
“We wanted to provide an opportunity for our skate community to continue to skate no matter the weather conditions,” said local company rep Joy Davis-Fair.
Skaters can book free sessions at the Lorimer Street garage if they get there fast enough — only 10 skaters are allowed in each session, which are first-come, first-serve — and ramp-test new swoosh-adorned products in the process.
The depot is a seasonal stand-in for the sprawling outdoor skate park the brand opened along the waterfront during the summer — a collaboration with local park conservancy the Open Space Alliance that will make a comeback after the cold-weather location shutters for good at the end of March.
And Nike plans to roll out more outdoor parks in the borough during the warmer months, said Davis-Fair — the shoe-maker will lock down locations after consulting local deck-heads, just as it did before kicking off the indoor park, she said.
“We try to stay close to everyone and really get a sense of what is needed at the moment,” she said.
So far, the garage has been a big hit for locals and interlopers alike — Davis-Fair said skater kids from Manhattan and the Bronx have already traveled all the way to the borough of Kings to hit the pop-up’s warm ramps.
