One person dead in Crown Heights fire

One person is dead after a large Crown Heights fire that engulfed an apartment on Monday morning. 

The inferno broke out at 1760 Union Street near Rochester Boulevard just after 1:45 p.m., and around 60 FDNY personnel across 12 units rushed to the scene.

Firefighters located the source of the blaze on the third floor of a large six-story building, and battled the fire for nearly an hour until it was finally put under control at 2:36 p.m., the FDNY said. 

After the flames were extinguished, first responders found one person with severe burns, and pronounced them dead on the scene.

Authorities did not immediately release the name or information about the deceased individual. 

The cause of the incident is still under investigation by the fire marshal’s office.
