Management has closed the Prospect Park YMCA indefinitely after discovering a chemical contamination of its water supply.
The gym — located at 357 Ninth Street, between Fifth and Sixth avenues — has been shuttered since July 2. Gym employees could not confirm a date for the gym to reopen.
According to the YMCA’s website, the water was infected with the chemical propylene glycol while they were performing maintenance on the gym’s air conditioning system.
“The Food and Drug Administration has classified propylene glycol as an additive that is ‘generally recognized as safe’ for use in food,” according to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention.
Gym management originally said the leak was ethylene glycol — a much more toxic substance — before issuing a late correction on July 3.
The YMCA is urging anyone who was possibly affected by the contaminated water to seek help.
“If you drank the water at the Y after 6:00 p.m. on July 1 and feel unwell, please seek medical attention immediately,” reads the gym’s website.
A spokesperson for Mayor Bill de Blasio — who routinely travels 11 miles via motorcade from Gracie Mansion to workout at the Ninth Street YMCA — could not immediately comment regarding hizzoner’s exercise plans during the closure.
