Bensonhurst Park will get a brand new playground, pathways, and benches as part of a $6.5-million renovation of the public space, which, according to Councilman Justin Brannan (D–Bensonhurst), has lain in disrepair for years.
“It’s a park that really needs some love,” Brannan said about Bensonhurst Park, located on Cropsey Avenue between 21st Avenue and Bay Parkway.
The construction will rebuild and expand the park’s 20-year-old playground, as well as install spray showers, light fixtures, walkways, and a drainage system along the public plaza’s northern half, Parks officials confirmed.
The renovation, which began last week and will wrap up by fall of 2020, is the first significant capital investment that the 17.5-acre park has received since the 1980s, a Parks Department spokeswoman said. Councilman Brannan allocated over $5 million to the project, the Mayor’s Office pitched in $1 million, and Councilman Mark Treger (D–Coney Island) contributed $300,000.
Brannan said that upgrade won’t be the park’s last, and hopes to provide funding for new bathrooms and revamped sports fields across the plaza.
“By the time I’m done, I want to completely overhaul this entire park so it can be the world-class recreational area people deserve,” Brannan wrote in a Facebook post.
