Pedestrian killed by driver on Surf Avenue

A pedestrian was fatally struck by a driver in Coney Island in the early hours of Wednesday Aug. 22.

The 75-year-old victim was squatting in the center of Surf Avenue near W. 33rd Street shortly after midnight when he fell backwards into traffic going towards Seagate and was struck by a car, according to police.

The police’s highway collision investigation squad responded to a 911 call at 12:10am and found the man lying unconscious and unresponsive in the roadway. Emergency medical personnel transported the victim to Coney Island Hospital where he was pronounced dead.

The 50-year-old male driver who struck the pedestrian with his 2005 Mercedes-Benz CLK 320 remained on the scene and was arrested for driving with a suspended license, police said.

The identity of the victim has not yet been released, pending the notification of the family, and the investigation is still ongoing, according to police.
