Cops are hunting for two men whose verbal dispute on a Coney Island street escalated into a deadly shoot-out that killed a woman and injured another guy on Monday.
The suspects started arguing on W. 33rd Street near Neptune Avenue, when one of them fired multiple shots at the other before fleeing toward Mermaid Avenue, according to police, who rushed to Mermaid Avenue near W. 35th Street after a nearby ShotSpotter scanner — a sensor attached to roofs and poles that detects gunshots — reported the gunfire around 11:42 pm.
The shots missed their intended target, however, instead striking 53-year-old Dorothy Dixon in the torso, and a 47-year-old man in his leg, cops said.
Officers ultimately found the victims, whom a Police Department spokesman described as colleagues, at a fire house on Neptune Avenue and W. 25th Street, where another of their co-workers transported them in an attempt to seek medical attention after the incident, the spokesman said.
Paramedics rushed Dixon, who lived in Crown Heights, to Coney Island Hospital, where doctors pronounced her dead, according to officials, who said the male victim sought treatment to his injury at NYU Langone Hospital-Brooklyn, and described his condition as serious, but stable.
Cops have not released descriptions of the gunman or the man they said he argued with, and their investigation remains ongoing, police said.
