Police are asking the public to help identify a man who allegedly assaulted a woman and stole her purse on Brighton 13 Street in Brighton Beach on Oct. 11.

The thief allegedly approached the woman from behind between Ocean View and Brighton Beach avenues, just before 5:30 pm, and allegedly tried to take her purse from underneath her left arm, police said. But when the woman refused to let go of her purse, the man allegedly dragged her to the ground and ripped the purse — which she said had her cell phone and $40 cash inside — from her arm before fleeing on Brighton 13th Street towards Ocean View Avenue, according to police.

The woman sustained lacerations to her elbow and knees, and emergency medical personnel treated her at the scene, police said.

Police describe the thief as about 25-year-old, with black hair, who was last seen wearing a gray long sleeved shirt, blue jeans, and black sneakers.
