Power outages hit Coney Island, Gravesend, and Bath Beach Wednesday morning due to downed power lines at Stillwell Avenue and Avenue Z — leaving more than 1,100 residents in the dark on one of the hottest days of the year.
Officials reported that 1,172 customers in the area bordered by the Shore Parkway and Stillwell, Cropsey, and 27th avenues lost power around 9 a.m. Power was restored to 978 residents at 11:06 a.m. and to the remaining 194 Brooklynites at 2 p.m., according to a spokesperson. The outages did not cause any reported injuries.
The blackout comes on the heels of two major power outages — one on Saturday, affecting 72,000 residents on the west side of Manhattan, and another on Tuesday night, affecting 2,000 Staten Islanders, according to the New York Post.
Power outages will become more likely as rising temperatures reach a crescendo this weekend, a Con Ed spokesman told Pix11.
“We expect that there could be service outages,” the spokesman told Pix11 News on Monday. On Saturday and Sunday, temperatures will rise to over 100 degrees, and humidity will make the air feel between 105 and 110.
“Those things happen during heat waves,” he added.
Brooklyn pols have responded to the latest blackout with outrage, claiming Con Ed failed to communicate with its customers.
“This is completely unacceptable,” councilmen Mark Treyger (D – Coney Island) and Justin Brannan (D – Bay Ridge) wrote in a joint statement. “Con Edison was neglectful to inform their customers, as we were only made aware of the outage by the NYC Office of Emergency Management around 11:00 a.m. this morning.”
