Police arrested a man suspected of killing a renowned educator while burglarizing his Flatbush home on May 7.
Paramedics pronounced Jeremy Safran — a professor of psychology at the New School in Manhattan — dead at the scene after authorities found him unconscious and unresponsive in the basement of his Stratford Road residence at 5:54 pm, while responding to a 911 call about the in-progress burglary, according to a police spokesman.
“He had trauma to the head and body,” the spokesman said.
Officers also found the 28-year-old suspect hiding inside a basement closet, and took the man into custody, later charging the Sheepshead Bay resident with murder and burglary, cops said.
Safran’s death shocked faculty and students at the New School, where the 66-year-old academic gained acclaim for his work with psychotherapy, according to a spokeswoman for the institution.
“Jeremy was deeply respected and admired by the New School community and his colleagues throughout the psychology profession,” the rep said. “We offer our deepest condolences to his family.”
Police are still investigating the incident, and the medical examiner has not yet determined the cause of Safran’s death, according to officials.
