They did the bookworm!
Youngsters boogied down in the courtyard of the Brooklyn Public Library’s Central branch at a Saturday concert kicking off the system’s summer-reading program, an initiative library leaders organize each year to keep kids’ minds sharp while they’re out of the classroom.
“We provide books for every age, every level,” said Kimberly Grad, who coordinates childrens’ activities for the library.
The live performance from local G-rated rockers Joanie Leeds and the Nightlights nodded to the theme of this year’s reading program, which focuses on how music and literature overlap following the library system’s debut of its instrument-lending program last month.
Kids who came out for the show enjoyed other musical activities at the event, which included pounding on drums brought in for the occasion and a lesson in how to create their own sound machines using found bric-a-brac and recycled materials, according to a library rep.
And attendees, of course, signed up for the reading program, which offers participants curated reading lists, free activities at branches across the borough, and page-turning challenges with prizes to encourage tots to crack open a good book while school’s out for summer.
