School bus driver crashes, dies after “medical episode” while driving kids in Dyker Heights

A Bensonhurst school bus driver died on Oct. 18 after he struck an empty parked 2011 Honda Accord on 71st Street in Dyker Heights, according to police.

The incident occurred just before 7:30 am, when 63-year-old Po Kam Lau was driving the bus down 71st Street from 11th Avenue towards 12th Avenue when he veered to the left and struck the car at 12th Avenue, police said.

Lau was unconscious and unresponsive when officers arrived at the scene, prompting emergency medical personnel to transport him to Maimonides Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead, according to police, who said that Lau had a “medical episode.”

Police said that there were children on the bus at the time of the crash, but there were no other injuries reported. Police did not know ages or the number of children on the bus.

Officers referred questions about the bus route and destination to the Mapleton-based Careful Bus Company, which operates the bus.

A rep for the company confirmed that Lau was an employee, but did not respond to multiple inquiries by press time regarding what happened to Lau or what school he was driving to.

The Police Department’s Collision Investigation Squad is investigating the incident.
